Spotlight on the 2014 Holiday Home Tour
Saturday, December 6, 2014, 10:00am – 3:00pm
Tickets on sale now, HERE, at the library, and at Chester County Book Company (cash or check only at CCBC).
This year our Holiday Home Tour focuses on twin and row homes in the southwestern portion of the Borough of West Chester. A variety of house styles are featured on the tour of ten homes; six of those homes are either a twin or a row home dating between 1846 and 1910. The library is open that day as well. Stop by before or after your tour to see our historic building and enjoy refreshments.
A little background on this year’s homes:
When it was completed in 1858, the railway connecting West Chester, Malvern and Media to Philadelphia allowed workers easy access to the jobs available in West Chester. Businesses such as the Sharpless Separator Works, the Wheel Works, several nurseries, and many other enterprises were booming. All of them needed workers, and the influx of new workers and their families triggered a housing shortage. Land owners began selling off parcels in the borough; builders began constructing homes, especially the twin and row homes that allowed for higher density housing in town.
As the housing supply grew so too did the borough’s population. The borough’s population in 1850 stood at 3,172. By 1900 it had tripled to 9,524. Today West Chester’s population numbers around 18,000.
Tickets for the 2014 Holiday Home Tour go on sale October 1, 2014 at the library (main desk), the Chester County Book Company, and online from our website. Ticket price is $30.00 per person and $40.00 per person the day of the tour.
